SWEET REVENGE

By Jacqueline Jung

Monday night I confidently strolled into the high-tech sports bar wearing my blue Chargers cap and tight matching tank top. Stunned expressions and a few sneers hit me but bounced right back off. Offensive words penetrated my ears. I?m blonde, but not quite a bombshell. Why all the fuss? This was Raider territory, but I wasn?t in Oakland...or even close to it. Believe it or not, this was Los Angeles; and little did I know that this would be the perfect night for revenge.

Why do Angelinos still hold affection for the Raiders? They left Oakland and moved to L.A. in 1982; then proceeded to move back home in 1995. If your man returned to his ex-honey after spending that much time with you, wouldn?t you shout ?Bye, chump? or at least secretly map out his demise? No, these fans still lust for their team like an old lover. The worse you treat them, the more they ache for you. Loyalty should be respected only if it is reciprocated. Remember in high school when your best friend lied about you or maybe even told some ugly truths? You eventually got your revenge, or least never forgave her. OK, maybe it?s a female thing. How did I feel about the Chargers leaving L.A.? That was 1961, and I don?t even remember. See, I can forgive and forget. Besides, San Diego is only about a two hour drive; so the Chargers are my home team.

I sat down with my margarita, trying to decide which of the twelve wide-screen televisions to view the inevitable destruction of my enemy on. The first game hadn?t concluded. Vikings were leading the Redskins 19 to 16. With 17 seconds left, I prayed that Washington would miss the field goal. Not that I really cared who won; I was just anxious to witness the punishment that was about to be cast upon the Raiders. Good, the first game was finally over. After multiple commercials, the battle ensued. I bantered back and forth with the inebriated men and women. Soon there wasn?t much to joke about. The rest was football history; rather sad?no, not really. The gruesome details were as follows. The two Raider quarterbacks suffered nine sacks and together only threw eight completions. Oakland?s total offensive yards were 129 to San Diego?s 302. The final score: Chargers 27 to the Raiders ?zip?.

I gleefully left the bar. No one was teasing me now, but I did watch my back as I stepped into the dark of night. Raider fans are as devoted as I am vengeful. I know I put myself in a precarious situation.

Haven?t the Raiders endured enough punishment over the last few years? You tell me to just get over it. No, this is way too much fun. And don?t even ask me what I think of the Rams.
